CHAPTER FIFTEEN

Hayden gave them a copy of the plans for the Commonwealth embassy before they left the gathering, with the caveat that the building had been extensively renovated in the last six months. Since the building was technically on Commonwealth soil, they had not been required to send over new blueprints showing the changes. In fact, Hayden had hinted to her that the blueprints had not been obtained legally.

Like Alaric, Aasha had changed before joining Marcus and the rest of the Pack in the small lounge that had become their headquarters, to pour over the old blueprints. She stood next to Alaric and leaned over the table. Of their own accord, her hands curled into fists against the tabletop. She and Alaric weren’t standing particularly close together, and she was grateful of the distance between them. Their dance tonight crossed a vital line. And Aasha was struggling to remember why that boundary between friendship and something more was so important.

She looked back at the blueprints to give her something to focus on that wasn’t him.

“There has to be a way we can find out more information about the layout. What about deliveries?” she asked.

“All shipments delivered go to a bay in the back of the building, where embassy staff takes them,” Rafe said. “No one goes inside.”

“Can we get to one of the staff?” Alaric asked.

“That’s the strange part,” Lexi said. “The staff hasn’t left the embassy in weeks.”

Alaric looked up at her. “Do we know why?”

Lexi shrugged. “The story the families were given was that it would only be for the duration of the summit, for security purposes. But, Constantine is gone now, and still…”

Aasha frowned, frustrated. “There must be something,” She had made two attempts to get into the embassy grounds after she concluded her shopping earlier in the day, but had difficulty getting inside. No sooner had she cleared the fence, then she’d find herself back on the street in confusion. It had to be some sort of ward, although the skill needed to create one so specific as to allow deliveries while repelling intruders was extraordinary, unless it left the normal entrances unencumbered. She had never encountered the like, and considering how often she was somewhere she wasn’t technically supposed to be, that was a lot.

“There might be someone,” Marcus said caution coloring his tone. “If the bastard is still alive.”

Everyone looked at the old knight, waiting for him to elaborate.

“Back when we were first starting the Compound, I came down to San Jose relatively often. The hope was that my standing as a retired Knight of the Illutu Order would give us a level of legitimacy with the government.”

Aasha nodded. Marcus often shared tales of misadventures in San Jose. The city had been wild then, and his brand of diplomacy had earned him the nickname Marcus Blademaster.

“At times,” Marcus continued, scratching his beard, a habit of his when he was about to say something he didn’t want to, “that meant dealing with the more…colorful citizens of the city.
